Reading N1sd/K1sd Domes

Last night, I started to experiment with cutting the sand domes for the K1’s and the N1’s. I plan to build two N1’s and a pair of Reading built K1’s. So I’ll need to make eight domes.

I’ll post more photos as I work out the process to make them.

It looks like you ground a cutter to the contour of the dome top. Nice bit of work! Do you plan to fly-cut the boiler contour on the base?

    Thanks,

    • Gene,
I can’t take credit for the radius cutter, it’s a Radius-Cutting Carbide-Tipped Tool Bits, Concave Bit from McMaster-Carr. I studied the drawing and sized the radius and they had a cutter for that size. I figured since it was 1/4 the cost of a radius cutter from sherline it was worth tying. I like the results.

I was thinking of fly cutting the radius for the boiler at first. I bored out the centers and have an.045 wall. Now I think I’m going to make a pattern, mark the shape, machine out the rough cut and then file to the final shape of the boiler.
